House Of Community : LAFF (Life After 55)
LAFF

LAFF (Life After Fifty Five) was started in 1988 when Rabbi Emeritus Hillel Gamoran felt there was a need in the Beth Tikvah area for a social group for Jewish seniors. The group is still vibrant, providing a variety of activities for both singles and couples. While specific details of forthcoming events will be publicized in the LAFF bulletin and on this web site, the following list below showcases some typical past events.

Join LAFF now.  Download the Membership Application, and complete and return it with your check.

Darwin and Marv
This musical twosome provides a great evening of entertainment with songs from the 40s and 50s, Yiddish songs, show tunes, and much more. Join us for a fun evening, including – what else – an ice cream social.

Schaumburg Flyers Baseball Game
Enjoy a beautiful afternoon at the ballpark watching the Schaumburg Flyers. We can’t guarantee the weather but know there is little congestion compared to Cubs park.

Grant Park Musical Festival
Listening to music at beautiful Grant Park is a most enjoyable evening. Bring a picnic dinner or purchase food at the park. Admission is free and LAFF pays for a portion of the bus fee.

Selichot Services
The entire congregation is invited to the Selichot service, which is a very stirring and meaningful service prior to the beginning of the High Holidays. The evening begins with a discussion program, followed by refreshments provided by LAFF, and concluding with Selichot Services.

Mystery Bus Ride
It’s a surprise! We can’t even tell you where we’ve been before. The fun-filled day begins when the bus leaves Beth Tikvah in the mid morning and ends after dinner, which is included. Everyone brings their own box lunch, and LAFF provides water and goodies.

Discovery Night
It is a fun scavenger night at the Temple, complete with games, prizes, surprises, and of course, “Nosherei.”

Pot Luck Dinner
LAFF will be serving the main dish and members are asked to bring an appetizer, salad or dessert.

Chanukah Party and Auction
Munch on delicious latkes, Chanukah cookies and other baked goods. Everyone brings one new item worth at least $5.00 which will be auctioned off.

Gala New Year’s Eve Celebration
It’s a time of year to join us for a full course dinner, drinks, champagne toast at midnight, music and dancing. Dress up and join the fun. Everyone is asked to bring canned goods or other non-perishables in support of our mini-food drive for the poor.

Purim Celebration
Put on your best costume or even just a great mask and join with others for games, fun and singing. Of course there will be hamantaschen and other goodies.

LAFF Shabbat
LAFF members conduct Shabbat services by participating in leading and reading the prayers in either English or Hebrew. LAFF also sponsors the Oneg Shabbat.

Dale Chihuly Art Exhibit
Internationally renowned Dale Chihuly glasswork is intertwined with the lovely gardens at the Garfield Park Conservatory. LAFF provides the bus and entrance fee. For those who wish to go out for dinner, it is Dutch treat.
